As we age it’s harder to keep our curves where we want them. With every passing year excess fat seems more inclined to migrate toward our mid-section. We may try to hide our embarrassingly protruding stomach behind names like beer belly, donut and muffin top; but the sad fact is that belly fat is not only unattractive, it’s unhealthy.

Body fat comes in two varieties: subcutaneous fat which collects under the skin’s surface and more dangerous visceral fat which collects around the body’s organs. Belly fat is the dangerous kind and has been linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and most recently to bone loss. Hormonal changes that occur with age encourage our bodies to produce more visceral fat and also make it harder for us to lose belly fat.

You have to work harder to lose belly fat as you approach mid-life. Crunches and sit-ups won’t whittle your middle like they did when you were younger. Concentrate on aerobic exercises that work your core. Increasing monounsaturated fats by adding nuts, seeds and olive oil to your diet will also help bust belly fat. (Click here for more belly fat-busting diet and exercise tips from Dr. Oz.)
